Bruce catches him looking at it, and in order to spare them both pain, he covers the painting, and carries it out of the room.   That evening, Bruce slides down the fire-poles to the Batcave, and imagines that he sees Damian there beside him, but the vision is marred by the sight of illusory blood smeared on the pole. A second glance, and it is gone.   He takes a moment to look at the case which contains Damian's costume and equipment, steels himself, and pulls his cowl down in preparation for his patrol.   Again, he is haunted by memories and hallucinations of his son beside him as Robin, and when he realizes that they aren't real, he is filled with rage. He channels that rage into his work, pushing himself harder than ever in his war on crime. That night, Commissioner Gordon is wakened in the early hours of the morning to find that someone else has turned on the Bat-Signal, and the roof of Gotham City Police Headquarters has been filled with criminals that Batman has caught.   Exhausted from more than just the effort, Bruce returns home, showers, and undresses. As he brushes past Damian's locker, he knocks loose a sealed letter addressed to him from his son. The letter tells of how Damian refused to be put on the side-lines of the fight with Leviathan, and worrying that he may not make it, he added that though his mother may have given him life, it was Bruce - his father - who taught him how to live.   The anguish of his loss fills Bruce with rage again, and he smashes the locker and throws its contents about the room. Cobblepot was there, having been brought there against his will by the Joker. Regardless of his lack of complicity in the Joker's plot, Batman had every intention of sending him to Blackgate Penitentiary. Unfortunately, as the Penguin pointed out, he did not have the evidence he needed to make any charges stick. As the Penguin left the asylum, Aaron Cash warned Batman that Victor Zsasz had escaped.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt Wayne Manor, Bruce reflected on the threat of having another insane killer on the loose in Gotham City, and the senseless violence that would soon occur. The same kind of senseless violence that had only recently robbed him of his only son.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCobblepot, meanwhile, returned to his house to find a gang of thugs sitting outside his estate. Though they admitted that the house belonged to the Penguin, they insisted that he was not the Penguin, and sent him away. Soon, Ogilvy received an angry call from Cobblepot, wondering just what was going on. Ogilvy explained that he had taken everything from the Penguin, and introduced himself as Emperor Penguin as Cobblepot spewed death-threats from his end of the line. After hanging up, the Penguin looked up to see that the children's center he had stolen from Bruce Wayne to name for his own mother had been stolen from him, and named for Ann Ogilvy - his former right-hand man's mother.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite Zsasz' escape, Batman found that Gotham's streets were rather quiet, and awaited the police calls reporting the madman's murders. When he finally heard the murder report come through, he was surprised by a second report of shots fired at the Iceberg Casino, and decided that now was the time to bring an end to Cobblepot's crimes.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, Batman crashes through the ceiling in time to catch Penguin in the act of shooting his way to Ogilvy's office. Penguin claims he is untouchable, but Batman points out that he has evidence of Penguin storing weapons at the zoo - which is municipal land. He broke into a storage container in order to retrieve that cache. He has evidence of trespassing, breaking and entering, illegal arms possession, and maybe even vandalism. Meanwhile, the lawyers that Cobblepot has been threatening to unleash should he be caught were only just murdered by Mister Zsasz. Soon, the GCPD arrives and places Cobblepot under arrest with charges that will stick. This, though, is all in exact accordance with Emperor Penguin's plans.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLater, Emperor Penguin has a meeting with Anya Volkova, a defector from the League of Assassins, who has stolen for him the precious Man-Bat Serum from Talia al Ghul. A CUT ABOVE During the Joker's reign in Arkham Asylum, Victor Zsasz finds himself able to satisfy his ongoing need to kill - and his need to record those murders by making a cut into his own skin. In the melee of the asylum's outbreak, Zsasz spots the Penguin, and is forced into a memory.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe once had been gambling at the Iceberg Casino, and his streak of bad luck had thus far caused him to nearly lose the entirety of the fortune he inherited from his parents' successful Zsasz Industries - which the Penguin was eager to facilitate. When the man has lost everything, even his own assets, the Penguin threw him out. When he had begged for some kind of mercy, Cobblepot simply told him \"that's life,\" and suggested that he kill himself.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, Zsasz corners the man who ruined him, and relishes the thought of being able to take everything away from him. Before he can claim the Penguin's life, the Joker appears and warns that he still has plans for the Penguin. Instead, he suggests that Zsasz go out into Gotham City and do what he does best.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOgilvy, meanwhile, spotted Zsasz escaping, and approaches him in the street, offering him the gift of a nearly two-hundred-year-old knife. He explains that they both have a desire to hurt Oswald Cobblepot, and he can facilitate that. She had been born with a skin condition - an aversion to sunlight. Though the doctor had prescribed her a lotion to protect her, little Pamela's abusive father had forbade her from going outside. On one occasion, when her mother allowed her to play outside, he had angrily punched her in the face, giving her a black eye. As if nothing had happened, Pamela's mother stepped outside and began gardening. Seeing her daughter there, she explained that she liked gardening because the flowers listen to her, and sometimes, if she stays very quiet, they speak back to her. When Pamela had asked about the black eye, her mother had assured her it was nothing to worry about. The abuse continued. Every time he hit her, Pamela's father bought his wife's forgiveness with flowers, and her garden would grow. That was how Pamela learned that flowers could manipulate people.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the man is about to hit his ex-wife, he is surprised when vines shoot up from the ground, and drag him up into the air. Ivy calls up to him, warning that the vines will squeeze until there is nothing left of him. She offers the mother and daughter the opportunity to watch, leave, or try to free him, but adds that if they do try to free him, she cannot guarantee their safety.   Ivy makes her way to Robinson Park and the Botanical Gardens, where a once green refuge is now a blazing inferno, thanks to crazed citizens, who revel in its destruction. It reminds her of how her own father had killed her mother, and buried her beneath her flower garden. From that crime, she learned that the best way to control those around her, she would have to maintain control over herself. Even so, she turns to the arsonists, and explains that she finds it as easy to attack them now as they did to attack the flowers. The difference, though, is that the damage done to the flowers is temporary; they will grow back. These fellows, however, will remain buried and forgotten, as they are pulled down under the ground by her vines and lost in the soil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn college, Pamela created designer drugs, doling pheromone pills out in order to study their effects. The University learned of her activities, and she was expelled and put in jail pending a criminal indictment. However, she had already used her pills to get the Dean under her thumb. Charges were dropped, and she graduated Summa Cum Laude.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eElsewhere in the park, Ivy encounters a gang of thugs who warn her to get off of their turf. She responds by bringing the earth itself to life around them, boasting that this turf answers only to her. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter graduating, Pamela visited her father in prison for the first time since the murder. He had stubbornly sat in silence, just staring at her and waiting for her to make the first move. After a time, she decided to do what made the most sense. She leapt up out of her seat and kissed him. By the next morning, he was dead, and the toxin used to kill him was untraceable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA pair of GCPD Officers nearly run Ivy down, but wind up slamming into a telephone pole at the last second. Rather than help them, Ivy complains of how Gotham's Finest failed her and her family. Within seconds of feeling her kiss, both men are dead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePamela landed an internship at Wayne Enterprises straight out of College at their R\u0026amp;D site just after the merger with Kane Chemical. She helped to develop pharmaceuticals and cosmetic applications, but she had greater aspirations. When Bruce Wayne came to look in on her division, she took the opportunity to present him with a business project that would cut his advertising division by 100%. In fact, she had used pheromones to get the meeting with him, and this was her proof that Wayne Enterprises could use pheromones to target clients, and modify their behavior to the company's benefit. Wayne refused her pitch on the grounds that it amounted to brainwashing, and removed free choice from the equation. Ethically opposed to her idea, Bruce Wayne fired her on the spot, warning that his company owned any research she had done, so she would not be able to pitch her idea elsewhere. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAngrily, she had rushed past security to steal what she could of her work back. Unfortunately, in the process, she was doused with her own chemicals. The chemicals changed her, making her immune to poisons and viruses, giving her command over any plant, and connecting her inexorably to The Green. She became something of an eco-terrorist, using her abilities to strike back at those who struck out at the Green. She was asked to join the Birds of Prey, but quit when they outgrew their usefulness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, Ivy has returned to Wayne Tower, and she has decided that because the company helped to create her, she will give something back. Without Batman, Gotham will stop being a selfish, criminal reflection of him. She rigs an explosion in the chemical lab, and watches from atop GCPD Headquarters as it ignites. In the aftermath, all of Gotham is covered in plants; a concrete jungle replaced by a real one. Two-Face has no interest, particularly since he put many of them away, when he was District Attorney. Angrily, he threatens to shoot Crane through the head if he doesn't return the coin, so the Scarecrow makes him guess which hand he's hiding it in. After making his choice, Scarecrow opens his palm to reveal a different coin - one of the communication devices used by the Secret Society.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCrane explains that the coin is an invitation from the Crime Syndicate - those responsible for the chaos ongoing in the city. If Two-Face agrees to come when the Syndicate calls, he will have help when he needs it. Two-Face flips his own coin on whether to join or not, and finds himself accepting the invitation. He warns Scarecrow, though, that regardless of who he has agreed to join, the coin will always have the final say.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, Harvey returns to his initial decision. Heads he saves Gotham; Tails, he lets it bleed. The coin turns up Heads. From that point on, Two-Face is a public defender, all over again, killing thugs and psychos alike, and dragging the survivors to the courthouse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs he steps inside among the corpses of murdered lawmen, Harvey remembers when he used to work there, as DA. He was well liked by those he worked with, and good to them. At the time, he, the Commissioner and the Batman had been trying to bring down Erin McKillen, the wife of a mob-boss who had recently died, and who had taken up his crime empire in his absence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince then, though, his old office is now home to the current DA, Richard Ozu. The office itself (and the innocents inside it) though, are under attack by the former minions of Terminus - those who have been wronged by the Batman's excessive use of force. After warning them away of those with whom he used to be coworkers, he rounds everyone up, and herds them down to the courtroom so that justice can be meted out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSitting at the judge's bench, Harvey begins flipping his coin; heads for life in prison, tails for death. His swift and efficient sentencing is interrupted by an armed group who claim that the men he is killing were tasked by the Society with gathering prominent Gothamites, and hanging them from the East River Bridge as a message to the world. If his prisoners and victims can't do it, Two-Face will be forced to do it instead. He reminds them that his joining the Society was conditional on the supreme deciding power of the coin, and flips it, finding that these prominent Gothamites should live. The gang ignores his judgment and kills everybody. Angrily, Two-Face turns on them, announcing that they have negated the deal he made, and he will no longer be party to the Society's plans. With that, he shoots the gang members dead and places the Society's coin into the open mouth of the gang's dead leader.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHarvey retrieves his own coin and decides to give that first decision another go. The tale she tells of her childhood is rife with lies and denials, but the truth was this: Her brother had been well-liked and good looking, while she was plain. While her brother had got roles in the entertainment industry as a child star, Shauna was passed over, despite her mother's lobbying on her behalf. The children at her school would make fun of her. She had always had a dark, violent response.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEventually, her brother had won himself a record contract, and she was intensely jealous. One day, they had been playing together on the swings, and she sabotaged the chains holding him up such that when he got too high, too fast, it snapped, and he was killed when his neck cracked against the cement. His name had been Ferdie - like the doll in her act.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWord spreads among Gotham's gangs of what's going on at the Melodian, while those already inside prepare to take their seats for the show, speculating on what they might see. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter Ferdie's death, Shauna's parents spoiled her, but she took advantage of it. When she attended a schoolmate's birthday party, poisoned the punchbowl and murdered the clown Rainbow Rodney, stealing his ventriloquist dummy, and rechristening it in her brother's name.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen Shauna was arrested for her crimes recently, she killed the officers taking her in, and began planning her stage comeback. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, the show is about to start, and the curtain rises on Shauna and Ferdie. Ferdie's lines are crass, and it makes the assembled audience uncomfortable, but they are afraid to leave. Meanwhile, a gang of thugs finds the doors to the Melodian barred, and decides to break in by shoving a 'truck through them. The noise alerts Shauna, who calls a stop to her show to investigate. As the thugs begin pouring in and threatening the already uncomfortable audience, Shauna and Ferdie appear, and begin killing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the confusion, one of the thugs finds his way into Ferdie's dressing room, and is disturbed to find a box full of scandalous love letters addressed to Batgirl. Ferdie catches him in the act of snooping, and tears him to pieces. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith the thugs all taken care of, Ferdie returns to find that Shauna has killed her audience as well, by having poisoned the food they had gratefully eaten, earlier.
